August 21, 1959 — Hawaii makes it fifty

Eisenhower signed the proclamation admitting Hawaii as the 50th state, and the 50-star flag you know was born soon after — designed, famously, from a submission by a 17-year-old Ohio student for a class project. He got a B. The flag got 66 years and counting.
