August 20, 1866 — the Civil War is formally declared over

President Andrew Johnson issued the proclamation officially ending the insurrection — sixteen months after Appomattox. Wars end slowly: the paperwork, the occupation, the reunification all outlasted the shooting. Peace, it turns out, is also something you have to build.
