August 25, 1916 — the National Park Service is born

Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service to keep the parks "unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." Today it stewards 400+ sites — not just the big parks but battlefields, memorials, and historic homes. You already own them; the entry fee is mostly just showing up.
