August 12, 1877 — Edison completes the phonograph

Thomas Edison finished the first working phonograph, capable of recording and playing back sound — a machine even he initially assumed would mostly be used for business dictation, not music. It's a reminder that inventors rarely predict what their own inventions will actually be used for.
