August 10, 1821 — Missouri becomes the 24th state

Missouri's admission came only after the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which paired it with Maine to keep an even balance of slave and free states in the Senate — an early sign of just how fragile the union's balance already was, four decades before the Civil War.
