August 7, 1782 — Washington creates the Purple Heart

General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit — a purple cloth heart awarded for "singularly meritorious action." It fell out of use for over a century before being revived in 1932 as the modern Purple Heart, the oldest military award still given to U.S. service members.
