August 4, 1790 — the Revenue Cutter Service is founded

Alexander Hamilton persuaded Congress to fund ten small ships to enforce tariff laws and stop smuggling — the birth of what would eventually become the U.S. Coast Guard. It's the country's oldest continuous seagoing service, older than the Navy as it exists today.
