July 30, 1619 — America's first elected assembly convenes

The Virginia House of Burgesses met for the first time at Jamestown — the first representative legislative body in what would become the United States, 157 years before independence. Self-government wasn't a Revolutionary War idea; colonists had been practicing it for generations.
