July 25, 1868 — Wyoming Territory is created

Congress carved Wyoming Territory out of Dakota, Idaho, and Utah — and its first legislature immediately granted women the right to vote and hold office, 52 years before the 19th Amendment made it national law. That head start is why Wyoming entered the Union in 1890 as "The Equality State."
