July 23, 1904 — the ice cream cone goes mainstream

At the St. Louis World's Fair, a waffle vendor next to an overwhelmed ice cream stand rolled his waffles into cones to help out — or so the popular story goes. However it really happened, the cone turned ice cream into a portable, uniquely American summer ritual.
