July 21, 1861 — the First Battle of Bull Run

The first major land battle of the Civil War, fought outside Manassas, Virginia. Washington, D.C. residents packed picnics and rode out to watch what they expected to be a quick Union victory. Instead, both sides learned the war would be long and brutal.
