July 19, 1848 — the Seneca Falls Convention opens

Roughly 300 people gathered in upstate New York for the first women's rights convention in the U.S. The Declaration of Sentiments they drafted borrowed its structure straight from the Declaration of Independence — "all men and women are created equal."
