July 11, 1804 — the Hamilton–Burr duel

Vice President Aaron Burr shot former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a duel at Weehawken, New Jersey. Hamilton died the next day. The founding generation was closer to a street fight than the marble statues suggest.
