General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to General Grant at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the Civil War. Grant offered generous terms — the men could keep their horses and go home — and Union soldiers were ordered not to gloat. The war to save the Union was won; reconciliation began at once.
