July 2, 1776 — Congress actually voted for independence

The Continental Congress voted to declare independence on July 2nd, not the 4th. John Adams predicted July 2 would be the day Americans celebrated forever. The Declaration was finalized and dated July 4th — and Adams was wrong. History is funny that way.
